Amanda Ward-Thomas’s paintings are a celebration of life, energy and movement, whether it be the lithe movement of the dancers, the mad energy of galloping horses and hounds, or the sweat and exhilaration of the athlete fighting to be first in the race. The works are like vignettes, taken at odd angles and layered one upon the other. She looks for the unusual view, the legs, the arms, the hands all tumbled together, pushing themselves to the limits of physical endurance. Their execution has an energy which matches the subject. The paint applied vigorously but unsparingly in broad, sweeping, brush strokes. Her selective eye creates an image blurred in part with just the key elements sharply defined, creating a work that seems to be constantly in flux. Her remarkable sense of colour homes in on a flash of blue, red or the translucent white of the drips of sweat on competitors. Amanda, having made her success in the study of horse racing, polo and hunting is now concentrating her efforts in other aspects of sport and subjects.
